Michael Ende’s “Lenchen’s Secret” is a story about the conflict between children and grown-ups, in other words – small and big ones. Little children must always listen to their parents, obediently, voicelessly. Because there are things one has to do, nevertheless one wants to or not! Not every person, but every child. Lenchen wants to be listened to, her words to be law and then suddenly a storm of little planes invade her room. “Fairy!” it says on one of the paper planes, then Lenchen grabs her jacket and leaves. It doesn’t matter if she’s a good or bad fairy. The only thing, that matters is that she can do magic. Ah, she can do magic! Two little sugar cubes change everything! The world turns upside down and big and small change places! Lenchen can do whatever she wants. But can she handle everything the world has to offer. If your parents are so small, that they sleep in the doll house, and can’t protect you, can you stand up to the world? If you cut yourself, if you are hungry, if you are locked up? And how much magic does it take to learn, that whether we’re little or big we need to listen? Quite a bit… just as much as two cubes of sugar!
